Organic Farming Tourism in Sikkim

Sikkim is India's only organic certified state. The state has not been using chemical ferilizers, pesticides and insecticides for the past 15 years and this has ensured that the organic fertility of the state is maintained.

People in rural Sikkim are committed to protect and preserve the organic way of growing vegetables, fruits and related edibles and this is a case study for educators as well as students to understand and explore.

Organic Farming Tourism would include the following aspects-

  • 1) Stay at rural homestays.
  • 2) Visit organic farms and interact with the producers so as to learn the several processes of organic farming.
  • 3) Commit half a day in the field sowing, growing or harvesting organic produces wherever possible.
  • 4) Interaction with the Horticulture Department officials who could further take the visitors through the journey of Sikkim's organic produce. They are also the one who are commercially engaged in the growth and sale of organic finished products.
  • 5)Interact with the end producers and manufacturers of organic product. They are also the ones who are commercially engaged in the growth and sale of organic finished products.
  • 6) Interact and report building on the process of how organic farming is sustained in Sikkim.
  • 7) Visit a local school and interact with the students
  • 8) Sightseeing and fun engagement.
